Earn and Save with Solar Electricity

Solar Electricity: An average 3kWp solar PV system can generate over 2,500 kilowatt hours of electricity a year, which equates to around three quarters of a typical household's electricity needs. You’ll save just over £185 a year with a system of this size. And by taking advantage of the Feed-In Tariff scheme which pays a fee for every Kilowatt Hour of electricity produced via a solar system – whether or not it’s used - you could earn an income of around £475 per year tax free.

The Feed-In Tariff (FIT) Scheme – How it Works

In April 2010, the UK Government launched its Feed-in-Tariff (FITs) scheme. FITs are payments to ordinary energy users for the renewable electricity they generate. Sometimes called ‘Clean Energy Cashback’, the scheme is designed to help increase the level of renewable energy in the UK.

If you ask us to install your solar PV system, you will be eligible for the government's Feed-In Tariff scheme (FIT). Under FIT you are paid for the electricity you generate, whether you use it all yourself or export any excess to the grid. Your energy supplier will pay you a set rate (currently 16p) for each unit (or kWh) of electricity you generate, with an additional 4.5p/kWh for each unit you export back to the electricity grid.

Assuming you install the average 3 kWp solar PV system, you can enjoy savings and income of around £660 per year – which is also tax free. This breaks down as follows:

  • £475 a year for the Generation Tariff a year
  • £185 a year due to reduction of current electricity bills a year

Based on these calculations, you should be able to recoup the cost of solar PV installation after 7-8 years, and anything you make thereafter is pure profit!

The payments are made from your electricity provider, e.g. Eon, EDF, British Gas. They can make the payment as a direct payment into your bank account or alternatively you can choose to have it paid as a credit against your own energy bills. Whilst the FITs payments are a government incentive for renewable energy, the actual fund set up to pay those who have the renewable energy systems installed, is funded by the different electricity supplier and is based on the proportion of the UK that they supply.

The suppliers recover this cost through an increase in electricity bills to standard consumers. So it makes sense to beat the electricity suppliers at their own game, by getting them to pay you the FIT’s payments and reduce your own electricity bill at the same time!
